Events for Kids under $5: Feb 25 – March 3 (Updated!)

Kids Clothes, Toys and Books Swap Meet

babyclothesUpdate: There are TWO Swap Meets this week…

When and Where:

  • Monday, Feb 25 10:00 am – 11:45 am, Eastside Family Place (just off of Commercial Drive and next to Grandview Park), 1655 William Street (map)
  • Saturday, March 2, 9:00 am – 12 Noon, West Point Grey Community Centre, 4397 West 2nd Avenue, Vancouver (map)

What: Kids “swap meets” are the single best way to get your hands on second hand stuff for the lowest prices. The bonus is that you know that the money is going directly to parents like you or, in this case, establishments like the West Point Grey Community Centre or Eastside Family Place, which support and provides resources for families with young children

New: Free Puppet-making Craft

marchbreak3_1024x1024When: Saturday, March 2, 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Where: Collage Collage, 621 Kingsway (at 15th + Fraser St.) (map)

What: Come and make a “fashionable” paper-bag puppet for free at Collage Collage. It’s part of the launch of the spring line from A Size Too Small. Collage Collage hosts craft workshops for kids and adults frequently, but they’ve got a price tag attached. This is a chance to do some crafts for free in a nice space.

Lantern Making Workshop, $2

When: Friday, March 1,  6:45 – 8:45pm

Where: Jules Quesnel Elementary School, 3050 Crown St. (map)

logoWhat: It seems to me like Vancouver has a lantern festival for each season. (I’ve already posted about three in the past three months: Winter Solstice, Hastings Park’s Lantern Fest, Lunar New Year). If you don’t have a lantern on hand, you can make one with Catching the Spirit Youth Society in preparation for another night-time family fest, Night Quest, during which families will explore Pacific Spirit Park on March 16th. They’re still looking for volunteers if you’re inclined to impersonate an elf, fairy, or other woodland creature. No experience necessary for the lantern making workshop, however you should bring a $2 donation to cover supplies, a hot glue gun (if you have one) and your creative spirit! Please RSVP so they know how many supplies they’ll need. Contact Sandra at info@catchingthespirit.com / 604-562-0583

Free Nutrition for Babies/Kids Seminar at Whole Foods

Whole_Foods_Reno_NVWhen: Wednesday, Feb 27, 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Where: Whole Foods, 510 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC (map)

What: Run by Victoria Pawlowski, a registered dietitian and family therapist, this seminar is all about information on helping your baby develop good nutritional habits and a positive relationship with food. The whole family is welcome to attend. Although I’ve yet to attend one of these seminars, I’ve read that the talk includes what foods to introduce to kids during each stage and how to introduce them, as well as cooking, finger food tips and dealing with issues around food for yourself and your child. You can preregister for the event by emailing info@victoriapawlowski.com.

A little further afield…

Free Salsa Classes for Parents / Tots or Babies on Wednesdays

salsababiesAlso at Brentwood Town Centre, you can come for a free Salsa Class and Spanish Lesson on Wednesdays in front of the London Drugs in the mall. Organized by Runners and Booties Fitness, you’ll get a workout too and learn a few salsa steps and Spanish phrases. Considering that this is on the skytrain line (and Monita’s Colombian heritage) I think I’ll check it out and report back one of these days. Classes are at 11:00am (Tots aged 1 – 5) and 11:45am (Babies, in carriers). Pre-registration is required, call Runners and Booties Fitness: 778-285-6265
